Student Communications

  • School personnel shall refrain from communicating with students outside the school setting on an individual basis. An exception may apply if the school administration receives written consent from a student’s parents or guardian, which will outline the school-related items that may be discussed and the preferred method of Staff-Student Communications.

     If school personnel engage in communications with students outside the school setting and the communication conflicts with the written permission granted by the parent/guardian of the student, the employee shall be subject to disciplinary action by the school district. Such disciplinary action could include termination of employment with the school district.

    • School personnel engaging in electronic or digital communication with an individual student shall include the student's parent or guardian in any electronic or digital communication, unless such communication is on a school-approved platform and related to school and academic communications.
    • Exceptions to the requirement may be made in case of an emergency, subject to subsequent notification to the parent or guardian. School personnel shall make reasonable efforts to use school-approved platforms, systems, or applications that allow the automatic inclusion of parents or guardians in communications with students.

     Schools shall provide training developed by the State Department of Education for school personnel on the student communication requirements of this section.

     The communication platforms approved by the school administration are ParentSquare, Google Classroom, and Class Dojo.

Strong Readers Act (SRA)

  • The Strong Readers Act provides a foundation for student academic success. The Strong Readers Act is to identify students who have a reading deficiency including students with characteristics of dyslexia, every student enrolled in kindergarten, first, second, and third grades shall be assessed at the beginning, middle, and end of each school year using a screening instrument approved by the State Board of Education for reading skills including, but not limited to, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Any student who is assessed and found not to be meeting grade level targets shall be provided a program of reading instruction designed to enable to the student to acquire the appropriate grade level reading skills. The program of reading instruction required shall be based on scientific reading research and shall align with the subject matter standards adopted by the State Board of Education.

    1. Sufficient additional in-school instructional time for the acquisition of phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension;
    2. If necessary, and if funding is available, tutorial instruction after regular school hours, on Saturdays, and during the summer; however, such instruction may not be counted toward the 180 day or 1080 hour school year required by law;
    3. Assessments identified for diagnostic purposes and periodic monitoring to measure the acquisition of reading skills including, but not limited to, phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, as identified in the student's program of reading instruction;
    4. High-quality instructional materials grounded in scientifically based reading research, and
    5. A means of providing every family of a student in prekindergarten, kindergarten, first, second, and third grade access to free online evidence-based literacy instruction resources to support the student's literacy development at home.
  • Lane Public Schools provides the best quality instruction for your student.  Each student enrolled in one of our elementary schools is monitored closely for reading difficulties and provided additional instruction if reading below grade level.  Students are given the STAR or Istation Reading Assessment at the beginning, middle and end of the school year to determine reading abilities and monitor growth.  This assessment assists teachers in choosing appropriate level reading material and determining the best course of instruction for the student.  A student enrolled in kindergarten, first, second, or third grade who exhibits a deficiency in reading at any time based upon the screening instrument shall receive an individual reading intervention plan no later than thirty (30) days after the identification of the deficiency in reading. The reading intervention plan shall be provided in addition to core reading instruction that is provided to all students.
    The reading intervention plan shall:

    1. Describe the research-based reading intervention services the student will receive to remedy the deficiency in reading,
    2. Provide explicit and systematic instruction in phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension as applicable,
    3. Monitor the reading progress of each student's reading skills throughout the school year and adjust instruction according to the student's needs; and
    4. Continue until the student is determined to be meeting grade-level targets in reading based on screening instruments or assessments.

     

  • Practice makes perfect!  Providing a quiet place and time where your student can read is very helpful.  Reading with or to the student shows how reading should sound and creates a joy of reading.  Making sure your student has books at their reading level is also important.  If you do not have “just right’ level books at your home, encourage your student to bring books from school or visit the local Atoka County Library.   The teacher or school librarian can help you with your book selection.
